A new training, education and science centre has opened in Buda, christened “House of Wisdom, the home of knowledge”. The House of Wisdom, besides doctoral training, will also be a venue for scientific and educational lectures, workshops and cultural events.
As a result of the excavation and reconstruction works started in 2014 the now completely renewed building, formally operating as the city hall of Buda will primarily house educational and scientific work. The Pallas Athéné Domus Sapientiae Foundation created a scientific workshop with outstanding standards of modern education, providing advanced training to economic and finance professionals.
The Széchenyi University Doctoral Program in Economy and Management (hereinafter referred to as SzEEDSM), an English language program offered jointly with the Széchenyi István University in Győr, is unique in Hungary. In the training, prominent international professors and educators provide additional knowledge, along with the opportunity to acquire a doctorate, to professionals with proven professional and practical experience. The house of knowledge houses the Pallas Athéné Innovation and Geopolitical Foundation, as well as the Geopolitics Doctoral Programme, launched in cooperation with the University of Pécs.
The goals of the Pallas Athéné Domus Sapientiae Foundation include value creation in addition to value preservation. The House of Wisdom will always be a venue for topical and novel scientific and educational lectures, workshops and cultural events in the future. The basement and ground floor are open to the public and the cellar houses event halls. There is a reception area in the front courtyard, a restaurant and café in the courtyard facing Úri street, and the bookstore and exhibition space of Pallas Athéné Books are located in the part of building opening to Szentháromság street.
“The very first word is about appreciation. There were many taking part in this process of value rescuing and value creation, as a result of which one of the most beautiful historic building of Hungary could get a new lease of life” said György Matolcsy, governor of the Central Bank of Hungary in his welcoming speech. The governor of the Central Bank reminded the audience: the reconstruction of the building, revived under the name of the House of Wisdom, happened in a notable period, as now the strengthened Hungary forms a bridgehead between East and West. Besides educational programs, doctoral trainings and scientific work, the House of Wisdom will also accommodate two foundations of the Central Bank, together with a bookstore of Pallas Athéné Publishing House, and will also be a venue of professional conferences.
László Palkovics, Minister for Innovation and Technology in his speech reminded the audience that without innovation it is impossible to adjust to the surrounding, quickly changing world, in which the arising issues often cannot be tackled by economics or law by themselves.” It is only innovative doctoral schools, like the one located in the House of Wisdom opened for the public now, that could give an answer to such new, complex challenges” said him. According to László Palkovics Hungary can be proud of what it has reached so far in the field of innovation, but it cannot be satisfied with the success stories of the past. “Everyone needs to play an active role in this matter, and the Central Bank of Hungary and its foundations play a pivotal role in this respect” emphasized the Minister for Innovation and Technology.
Gábor Tamás Nagy, mayor of District 1 in his speech mentioned that while the current Szentháromság square and its surroundings had to be reconstructed from ruins following the siege of the Buda Castle in 1686, as a result of the works carried out in the recent years, the building of the Buda Old Town Hall, constructed back in those years, could be rescued for posterity. “Owing to the hard work of the Central Bank of Hungary and its foundations the Castle has been enriched with a real gemstone, a beautiful building that would be filled with content” said him. “The reconstruction of the building of the Buda Old Town Hall has been an exemplary process for the reconstruction of any historic building. As a result of the works the almost 800 years long history of the building – together with the medieval structure – has become visible” highlighted András Végh, leading museologist of the Budapest History Museum.
This year the third class is launched by the Széchenyi University Doctoral Program in Economy and Management, an English language program offered jointly the Pallas Athéné Domus Sapientiae Foundation and the Széchenyi István University in Győr, with the education taking place in the House of Wisdom. In the training, prominent international professors and educators provide additional knowledge, along with the opportunity to acquire a doctorate, to professionals with proven professional and practical experience. “In order to be successful there is a need for extensive co-operation and a favourable juncture of circumstances. We could not have been able to go so far without the support of the Central Bank of Hungary, its foundations, and the management of the Széchenyi István University.” said Professor Gyula Vastag, leader of the doctoral program. “The very spirit of the house inspires us for further innovations. I am sure that the doctoral programs organized together with the Széchenyi István University and the University of Pécs will generate even more outstanding results in this beautifully renovated building.” said Zoltán Dubéczi, Director of Education at the Central Bank of Hungary.
