Within the framework of the Doctoral School of Earth Sciences of the University of Pécs, as well as the support of the Pallas Athéné Foundations and under the leadership of István Szilágyi PhD a geopolitical doctoral program entitled “Geopolitics, Geoeconomy and Political Geography from a Central European Perspective” was launched in September 2015. This is a successful program, currently working with two classes (and the participation of almost one-hundred scholarship students. The aim of the doctoral program is to provide an answer to the international challenges of the 21st century from CEE perspectives by using multidisciplinary approaches.

Geopolitics, as an interdisciplinary area is at the ‘frontiers’ of primarily geography, economics and political science, however, at the same time, it can also be considered as an analytical system that interprets questions arising in a specific geographic area in a complex manner and is able to provide complex solutions for them. For this reason, geopolitics represents an important dimension of economic policy, the professional-scientific exploration thereof has economic-political importance, just like the boosting of its performance.

Lectures and courses in the program are also held by guest lecturer, who are the major Hungarian and internationally recognized researchers, strategic thinkers, experienced professors, as well as the leaders of the highest-ranking think-tanks. The students can learn in English and Hungarian languages, and they also have the possibility to enrol to courses of the most substantial foreign universities (Stanford, King’s College London, University of Oxford, Harvard University, University College of London) and leading geopolitical – geostrategic institutes (such as the Geneva Institute of Geopolitical Studies).

The admitted students have an access to the latest international literature and databases, can also follow up innovative research topics and trends and they can continuously take part in open scientific workshops Besides the venues of the University of Pécs it is the House of Wisdom that provides a location for the classes and events.
